In my first blog, I mentioned that I did not believe that technology was being used to its full potential in the classroom. The five standards above explain in detail how technology can and should be used by teachers in order for it to live up to its maximum potential. In my experience, both as a student and a pre-service teacher, teachers mostly use computers for drill and practice. Very seldom have I seen computers being used in a way that inspire student creativity.

In my opinion, these standards seem a bit overwhelming for a soon-to-be new teacher at first glance. Especially for me because I have never seen these standards actually being executed. I do, however, believe that these standards are very doable and that with the proper training and motivation, I will be able to abide by them in my classroom and give my students a fun AND educational technological experience.

Intro to Me

My name is Gabrielle Green. I'm 22 years old and my major is elementary education.  My career goals are to become an excellent elementary school teacher, become an equally excellent psychology college or university professor (on weeknights), and open my own small, preferably non-profit tutoring business.

Being born in the late 80's, I grew up using technology: computers, cell phones, video games, etc.  I also took a two year vocational business computer technology course while in high school.  Because of these two things, I feel very comfortable with using technology in just about every area of my life, including my future career - teaching. I know that I do not know everything there is to know about technology, but I am a very quick learner and I'm confident that I can learn how to effectively incorporate technology into my classroom.

My view of the use of technology in teaching and learning is that it is taking place, but not to its full potential. When used correctly, I believe technology can have great benefits in teaching and learning. Technology can be used to diversify instruction in a way that would make the material being taught much easier for students to retain. It can make learning fun and exciting and it can make teaching more effective. Unfortunately, because of various reasons (lack of funding, resources, know-how, etc.), teachers are not using technology as much as I believe they should. Hopefully, in time, this will change.
